The Importance of Patient Involvement in Orthodontic Treatment

Our orthodontists, Dr. Storie, and Dr. Sturgill, love seeing the smiles on patients’ faces once they’re done with treatment! At Sturgill Orthodontics, we believe that treatment goals are reached, and beautiful smiles are achieved when patients are involved with their treatment.

Without a doubt, orthodontic treatment is a two-way street that requires effort from both the orthodontist and the patient. Enthusiastic patients are much more apt to follow instructions regarding oral care and diet. Good cooperation can yield results that meet everyone’s expectations.

Patients Can Choose the Colors of Their Elastic Ties

For those patients wearing conventional metal braces that consist of brackets and wires, we let them choose the colors of their elastic ties that bind the wires to the bracket. This allows these patients to make fashion statements with their smiles as there are many colors from which to choose. Many of our school-aged patients show their school spirit by choosing their school or team colors. Because these ties can be changed when wires are changed, many patients choose to change the colors of their ties at various times during their treatment as a way to express themselves. Not only are colorful braces fun, but they’re a great way to get patients involved in their treatment.

All Colors of the Rainbow and More!

Our practice has found that patients won’t take the time to choose special colors unless they intend to use them. That’s why we always have a good supply of colors on hand and especially when holidays are approaching. Patients can celebrate each time they smile, year-round. For instance, they can sport red and white for Valentine’s Day, green for St. Patrick’s Day, red, white and blue for the 4th of July, orange and black for Halloween, red and green for Christmas, blue and white for Chanukah and red, and black and green for Kwanzaa.

In addition to school-aged patients, many of our adult patients also express themselves with color. Many adults choose to wear their favorite colors, some go with the colors of their favorite pro or college sports teams and many show their spirit during each of the holidays they celebrate by wearing corresponding colors.

For those patients who prefer to be less obvious about their orthodontic treatment, we offer a variety of orthodontic treatment options including tooth-colored brackets, self-ligating brackets, braces which are placed behind the teeth, and translucent aligner trays.
